Royal “set-to” in Royal Park

That is fantastic. Unfortunately for me, I don’t want to go to a commercial web space to view the photos. Did you cut Jen in on the advertising revenue, or is that not part of the love?

Hi Laurie, BA, BOCA, etc are incorporated associations, which makes them not-for-profit organisations. Like all such ‘assocs’ they are owned by their members. There is specific legislation in all states that separates ‘assocs’ from commercial entities (businesses). Both organistations have a constitution setting out their purpose and endorsed democratically by their members, that is made and registered under relevant legislation (Victorian, in both cases I believe). Elected office bearers are not remunerated. The ‘assocs’ can (and do) undertake commercial activities to generate income, and they can (and do) employ people for such purposes. They can even own business which return profits to them. However, any surplus revenue goes back into the organisation or into charitable activities. No revenue is distributed amongst the owners under any circumstances. Both organisations use whatever surplus revenue they can generate to further their constitutional goals, which in these examples is bird conservation and research. Rotary, Lions Club, Landcare, RACQ, children’s cancer charities, etc. are incorporated and operate in the same way.   I can’t speak on the structure of Bird-O, except that it is not an incorporated association, so I presume that it is a business of some sort.   Incidentally, Birding-Aus may rely on internet infrastructure supplied free-of-charge by Yahoo. Yahoo is indeed a large business. However, Birding-Aus is not a business and is part of Yahoo. I can’t otherwise speak about its organisational structure.   By the way, I made no claim that I don’t use or visit commercial websites, or that they have no value. I said I didn’t care to use that option to view information that was originally placed in the public domain. I have no problem with commercial web sites. It’s true to say I don’t like the spruiking and hyperbole associated with the modern commercial world, but its part of life.

Sorry Peter you may be correct. I was just trying to point out that very few websites and useful things on the Internet have zero commercial content.

I don’t think birding-aus has anything to do with Yahoo, other than that an archive is maintained there, in addition to the one Andrew Taylor maintains.

The birding-aus listserver is on Vicnet, which is a division of the State Library of Victoria. Correct me if I’m wrong, someone.

    Hi David and B-A,

No, I didn’t get paid, nor did I personally put the article on Bird-O. Chris emailed after seeing my B-A note and asked if he could use it on Bird-O. I sent Chris the text and an image and he put it on the site, which I was happy to do and will do again if they ask. I am sure it is easy to do but I can’t be bothered working out Bird-O when I can use B-A so easily (sorry Chris and Simon).

If anyone wants to see my image of the Grebe it is on line at

    http://boca.org.au/photogallery/album/1

There are heaps of excellent images on this site, like the Shrike-tit that has just been put up. I have the site bookmarked so I can refer to it if I am looking for particular field marks on a bird. It is also fun just to go to and vicariously enjoy the birds.

Oh, and I got a lovely picture of a Rose Robin today that I will put on BOCA tonight so check the site tomorrow or Monday if you are interested.

    cheers

    Jenny

Just as a point of interest, how is the “commercial” nature of Bird-O any different to the “commercial” nature of Wingspan?

David, I wonder where you gather information? Is it only the web that is tainted when it has a commercial connection or newspapers, radio, magazines, journals…. ? Alan

  • Chris

    Hi all,

Thanks to David for your question about our website. To clear things up for everyone – currently all advertising on Bird-O goes back into the site to cover running costs and development of features. Neither Simon or I have seen a cent from the site to date and don’t expect to any time soon. We are running Bird-O because we love birds and birdwatching and see a great need for good quality, easily accessible information for birdwatchers of all skill levels in Australia.

I see the ability for birders to put up great photos like Jen’s with an interesting story attached as being of broad interest to the birding community. While we seek articles from specific authors or on specific topics from time to time, often it is spontaneous events like this that capture people’s interest the most. Major kudos to Jen for not just publishing the photo but also wanting to get the story behind it out there.

On another related note – I am surprised by the idea that commercial websites online are considered a bad thing. Personally I do my banking and a good deal of shopping online, and basically all the sites I visit on a daily basis have advertising in some form. Even the structure behind birding-aus itself is run by Yahoo, a massive international for-profit company akin to Google. I think if you are avoiding free content on commercial sites you are doing yourself out of some very interesting and informative experiences.

The articles and archives on Bird-O are free for people to read. While we can’t offer to pay people for articles or photos, we can provide a vehicle to get your information out to over 6000 interested birders in Australia and abroad. Anyone interested in getting something published can contact me directly or go through the website.

Best wishes and good birding, Chris Sanderson
