My highlights today were a Roseate Tern in breeding plumage & an extraordinary 31 Bridled Terns.
The Roseate Tern was found by a friend(Faye Smith) earlier in the day at Flat Rock, East Ballina. After work, I tracked it down resting on the rocks at Black Head, East Ballina.
I also had 5 Lesser Frigatebirds cruise overhead at Black Head, heading north. I then saw a single adult male Lesser Frigatebird & a juvenile Sooty Tern fly past Flat Rock & 2 Noddy species off Boulder Beach.
Next I tried Broken Head, just south of Byron Bay, where I got 5 more Lesser Frigatebirds, 3 Black Noddy, 1 Common Noddy, 1 juvenile Sooty Tern, 1 probable adult Sooty Tern & an Arctic? Jaeger.
Then I returned to Ballina, where I found a Lesser Frigatebird over Lighthouse Beach lookout & some Sooty? Tern types heading south past Black Head, I guessed heading for the Tern roosts in Richmond River.
Finally back to Flat Rock just on dark, where I counted 31 Bridled Terns which had come in to roost on the rock for the night, also 2 Common Noddy & 1 adult Sooty Tern & the 2 regular Wandering Tattlers.
Cheers, Steve
