RFI – Young Birders in Brisbane

Good morning Birding Ausers, I have had an enquiry from a family in Brisbane. They have a 12 year old son who is interested in birding and they were wondering if we had a group for young bird watchers in Brisbane. I have met a father and son team on a couple of occasions at wader roost but do not know their names. Also, I assume that there are more than a few birders in that age group and we would be interested in connecting them together. It would be lovely to be able to foster a love of birds in our younger people but so often, unlike in the UK, they feel very isolated. So if anyone has children in the 10 – 14/15 age bracket living in and around Brisbane that may be interested in getting together with similar minded peers we would love to hear from you! Kind regards Judith Judith Hoyle | Convenor BirdLife Southern Queensland PO Box 5457 Stafford Heights QLD 4053 southernqld@birdlife.org.au |birdlife.org.au ABN 75 149 124 744 birds are in our nature _______________________________________________ Birding-Aus mailing list Birding-Aus@birding-aus.org To change settings or unsubscribe visit: http://birding-aus.org/mailman/listinfo/birding-aus_birding-aus.org

Hi I admire young people who follow theor passion for birding in Australia. It must be a bit lonely out there. Just a couple of ideas: Get involved with the Pledge2Fledge program. You never know who you might convert. If you do it through your school there is quite some potential. The school might really appreciate you sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm. Be in touch with your local council…sometimes they get to know who is out there locally. They might run fauna surveys where you can meet others or be Iinvolved in other events or programs. Hi Judith and BA Myself and a few others have been trying to do something along those lines for a few years now, however at the moment the Australian Young Birders (or AUYB) group consists of only 16 people between the ages of 15 and 20 Australia-wide. Unfortunately the only way we could really get it to work was to make a private Facebook group, which of course creates access issues for any younger birders who don’t have their own Facebook account! I’m friends with a group of British Birders too who just last year turned their Young Birders FB Group into a full-on organisation, now with a newsletter and a few hundred members, but unfortunately in Australia teenage birdwatchers are sparsely distributed! If anyone is a, or knows of any, young birdwatchers in Australia, feel free to get them to contact me (joshua.birdmark@gmail.com) and I can add them to the group or put them in touch with other like-minded people in their area.
