RFI tripod Gimbal mount

A query for those with spotting scopes.

I’m keen to – change my three handled tripod head for a Gimbal head, and – hear anyone’s advice on where to secure these.

So far they only appear to be web purchasable items in Australia (eg. B&H)

I agree with Dave, a reasonably priced video style fluid head would be more than adequate. I have used a Manfrotto Model #128, for I think nearly twenty years, it is sturdy and well made and is perfect for the spotting scope. The better camera store carry them or a later model.

Hi Martin, I don’t think i would recommend a Gimbal style head for a spotting scope. Much better to get a video style fluid head. The movement isn’t precise enough for a scope and I don’t think they weigh enough to get a good balance either. I only use my scope on my Mongoose if i really really have to. Having a handle gives a more subtle and controlled movement which is what you want. A gimbal head is meant for heavy telephoto lenses to make the lens feel weightless and be swivelled quickly and smoothly. Cheers David Stowe

PS – not sure what brand etc you are looking at but there are heads available in Aus although the Wimberley and Mongoose are best sourced from OS
