RFI Rock Parrot and Perth-Bunbury birding

Hello All,

I have 5 hours to get from Perth airport to Bunbury next weekend so will have a little time for birding and am wondering what best to do (at a reasonably sedate pace).

I dipped on Rock Parrot a few years ago (at Cape Leeuwin, a very painful experience) and am wondering what the likelihood is of catching up with one at Cape Peron (or anywhere else there)? There are so many other options though (thanks to Frank O’Connor’s and BA WA’s websites), and I don’t really want to go to Cape Peron and dip again and then miss out on looking at other places e.g. Wungong Gorge. This looks like it’s one of the best places to go for endemics in that area. (I would also like to see a Red-eared Firetail and a Red-winged Fairy-wren if that’s not asking too much).

Any suggestions?

TIA, Arwen

    Hi Arwen

On your way south from Perth Airport along the Tonkin Highway you might like to have a look at Ellis Brook Valley Reserve (turn left at Gosnells Rd East and follow the signs). I found Red-eared Firetail in the upper carpark and between there and the waterfalls there were Western Rosella, White-breasted Robin and Red-winged Fairywren. I was also lucky enough to briefly see a Square-taile Kite hunting further upslope. At the lower carpark (Honeyeater Hollow) were Western Wattlebird, Red-capped Parrot, Baudin’s Black-Cockatoo, Splendid Fairywren and Mistletoebird. Aptly named, this area was teeming with White-cheeked, New Holland, Brown, White-naped and Singing Honeyeaters a couple of weeks ago.

    cheers

    Hi Arwen,

I’m assuming you mean Point Peron near Rockingham? If so, then no chance, unfortunately! I suspect you would have to be very lucky to get Rock Parrots anywhere between Perth and Bunbury but I could be wrong as I don’t know the Bunbury area that well

Wungong Gorge isn’t as good as it used to be, but the wren and firetail should be there somewhere. An alternative site for these (and other south-west endemics) is Victoria Dam, which is probably better for firetail now. However, Wungong may be more conveniently located for a side trip on the way to Bunbury.

    Cheers, John
