Hi Paul, We were in the USA in September/October last year. One of our best birding experiences was in the Elkhorn Slough, near Monterey. We went on a nature watching cruise with this group http://www.elkhornslough.com/ We saw huge numbers of birds [ Herons, Grebe, Loon, Pelicans, Cormorants, Godwits, Curlew, Whimbrel, Gulls, Tern, Sandpipers etc.] and also adorable Sea Otters, Harbour Seals and Sea Lions. A later walk in the Reserve was also productive with hummingbirds, Acorn Woodpecker and more shorebirds. The harbour at Monterey has an impressive array of birds too. The Botanic Garden in San Francisco was good for Anna’s Hummingbirds, Mountain Bluebird and Steller’s Jay. If you are interested in seeing some amazing captive birds, the California Academy of Sciences [also in SF] had a multi storey indoor rain forest with gorgeous birds such as the Paradise Tanager. In their aquarium they have a selection of birds, including Tufted Puffins. If you have time, Yosemite National Park is just stunning. Best bird there was a group of Pileated Woodpeckers.
