RFI African Field Guides

Hi All

Am looking at doing a trip in Africa later this year, southern Zambia, northern Botswana and Namibia, mostly Namibia.

Can anyone suggest what would be the best field guide to take?

Thanks

Bob

LBJs of Southern Africa may also be available at http://www.netbooks.co.za/

    Hi Bob

Sasol Birds of Southern Africa is certainly one of the most comprehensive guides for everywhere except S Zambia, where you will find a few more species, but with a bit of research you can get internet based info on those.

There are also Apple and Android apps available – I have found the best of those is Roberts Multimedia, with plates, photos and the calls.

For the tougher species, there is a new book out, LBJ’s of Southern Africa, far more comprehensive than the earlier publication from Newman and King – this is only available through the author’s website (I don’t think international posting is catered for, but email him to find out) or at Chamberlains Hardware stores in South Africa (if that sounds an odd outlet, they sponsored the book). Check http://www.lbjs.co.za

    Hi

birds of africa south of sahara sinclair and ryancovers more territory than yoiu need but why not? Once you go to Africa you won’t be able to resist going again. I have been able to identify everything with this book.

    G’day Bob

The best field guide to southern Africa is the SASOL guide by Sinclair, Tarboton, Hockey and Ryan – either as a book or as an iPhone/iPad app. It omits Zambia however so another option is the Birds of Africa South of the Sahara by Sinclair and Ryan.

I would also get a copy of the Southern African Birdfinder. An excellent “where to find birds” book.

Another is the excellent little book “LBJs made simple” by Newman and King for extra help on the tricky brown weavers, cisticolas, larks and pipits.

The nice folk at http://www.simplybirding.com would be happy to give you advice as well.

    Cheers

Bob when I lived down that way – this was the best book and I believe it still is (and it’s been updated): Birds of Southern Africa Ian Sinclair, Phil Hockey, & Warwick Tarboton Illustrated by Peter Hayman and Norman ArlottIt covers the whole area except Zambia but there are only a couple of additional species in southern Zambia – such as Black-cheeked Lovebird. You could go for: Birds of Africa South of the Sahara: Second Edition also by Sinclair. But that will have 100s of species that you won’t see – so it could be confusing. I’ve used the first suggestion in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana etc. without any problems. cheers
