Reporting Banded Terns

Hi everyone,

I saw a banded Little Tern in Sydney the other day. Should this be reported, and if so, who do I report it to?

Regards, Mark

    Hi Peter,

That was my original thought, so I did a google search to find where to post the sighting and the search returned the following link. http://www.environment.gov.au/biodiversity/science/abbbs/reportform.html. But that page mentions only recovered bands, and not sightings from live birds. So I wasn’t sure if I got to the correct site or not, hence the reason I’ve posted my request here. I also went to the Birdlife site to see if they had any information, but I couldn’t see any.

    Regards, Mark

    Thanks Nikolas,

I’ve attached 2 photos of the two birds I saw. One of the banded adult, and the other one of a juvenile Little Tern.

The right tarsus has a white flag over a metal band, and the left tarsus has 2 light blue flags.

    Regards, Mark

    Hi Mark,

What kind of band was it? Darryl McKay bands Little Terns and may be interested.

    Cheers,

    Nikolas

The Little Tern with flags ppwm was trapped on nest and flags put on at Towra Point Nature reserve, Botany Bay 05 January 2000. This bird is 15+ years old.

It has been recorded 10 more times, 2 at Towra Point on nest, 4 at Penryh inlet and 3 at Boat Harbour, Kurnell and 1 at Stockton Spit, Newcastle.

The juvenile most likely came from Towra Point.

This sighting and all flag sightings and band recoveries can be reported online to the http://www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&v ed=0CDMQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.environment.gov.au%2Fbiodiversity%2Fscienc e%2Fabbbs%2F&ei=Ox76UPrqCqPeigfG8YCQAw&usg=AFQjCNE7MDzYuJDKywtLenEJLtKuEGg-r Q&bvm=bv.41248874,d.aGc> Australian Bird and Bat Banding Scheme (ABBBS)

Shouldn’t all these sightings be reported to ABBBS to pass on to whoever is involved?
