Red Centre Raptor Nest Dramas

Hi Birders, While we’ve all been enjoying the Sydney Eagle cam online I’ve had my own raptor nest-dramas going on here in the Red Centre. I have a story on Bird-o right now about my hike up Mt.Gillen yesterday to inspect this year’s Wedgetailed Eagle chick. I have been following those birds for a few years now so I feel like the chick’s godfather! http://bird-o.com/2011/08/24/visiting-cain/ At the start of the week I was pleased to find that the Black Breasted Buzzard nest I’ve been monitoring now has an incubating female sitting in it so hopefully we’ll get some chicks out of that one in a few months.

The breeding Letterwing Kites at Mac Clarke Reserve have well and truly packed up shop now and dispersed as the Long-haired Rat numbers have dropped off. While they were nesting we kept the site quite low profile- sorry to any birders who missed out but getting those chicks airborne was the priority! Little Eagles seem to be setting up a territory again on Ormiston Creek/ Upper Finke River. I’ll be out that way next week so I’ll have a good look. No reliable reports of Grey Falcon nests so far this season but we are all keeping an eye out…
