Has anyone tried these small recorders in the wind? It would be disappointing if you couldn’t hear your notes later because of wind rumble. I’m also wondering if making voice notes ever spooks birds. Good point, Philip. There must surely be times when speaking draws attention to your presence and causes the bird to depart, and yes, I’ve had conversations near birds, but I don’t remember that happening. Perhaps the groups I’ve been in have just known when to keep quiet. When they develop a recording devise that translates your voice notes into a detailed list I’ll be very very happy! The one person I have met who uses a voice recorder all the time has to transcribe his notes from the recorder then update his records – which seems to me to be double handling. Although it does mean one is still able to survey the immediate area as one makes the notes, rather than have to look down to write. Might give the iPhone a go next time I’m out……. Graham Pizzey had a little recorder taped to his binoculars and he used to quietly dictate notes. Possibly one reason why his field guide text is so good. I use a Sony ICD PX312 for both notes and pre-recorded calls. I couldn’t do without it but had repetitive problems with similar Olympus models. —– Original Message —– From: Peter Shute To: Carl Clifford Cc: < birding-aus@vicnet.net.au> Sent: Thursday, July 11, 2013 5:35 AM Subject: Re: [Birding-Aus] Recorders for note taking – was (no subject) Has anyone tried these small recorders in the wind? I have used a small sony recorder for over 4 years. I just turn from the wind when recording in windy conditions. I don’t usually speak while I’m observing a bird close by but they don’t seem to mind if you speak quietly. It is excellent for recording calls of birds you are unsure of. I have done that and checked later especially when we are in a far off area with lots of new calls. Just make sure you carry spare batteries. If I bought a new one I would get one that I could download to my computer.
