Hi Birders, Myself and local conservation scientist Pete MacDonald did a quick scoot around the sewage ponds this morning in search of the Gilfedders’ Aussie Painted Snipe. After some welcome close encounters with the family of Buff-banded Rail on the site and one of the remaining Pied Herons (both Red Centre ticks for Pete) we were on the verge of calling it quits when we flushed a small snipe. It settled on the bank of a nearby pool and assumed a frozen pose among dead wood on the shoreline allowing us excellent views: no doubting its ID- Its a male Australian Painted Snipe and beautifully coloured. Pete got some nice shots which will be posted soon on my Wildiaries.com page.Anyone heading down there to look for it should probably concentrate the search to pond EP7- thats where its been for the last 18hrs or so, and its currently where the best snipe habitat is.
