Am I the only one that finds it sad that a small specialist tour company is being held responsible for the fact that certain grown adults are either to ignorant or to arrogant to pay heed to the tour advice before booking? It appears that Rockjumper made it perfectly clear what the physical demands were in the pre-booking information.

Tour companies ask personal details, such as age when you sign up for a tour. If someone says they are, say, over 65, it would be sensible for the tour operator to ask for a medical certificate from the would- be tour member stating that they are fit enough to undertake the tour. It is not an unreasonable request. After all, Travel insurance companies demand a medical certificate if you are over a certain age and if you have pre-existing medical condition for which you want coverage for.
Unfortunately I can’t see that happening, as a sizeable proportion of the client base for birding tours (and the tour industry generally) would fall into the elderly, unfit demographic. If tour companies stopped taking bookings from people in this demographic, they would find a drastic reduction in their profits. Birding tour companies are in the business to make a profit, not to provide a public service, so I can’t see much chance of any changes to the status quo.
If people do not want to be inconvenienced by their fellow travellers, the best thing is to go by yourself or one or two birders who you know well and are happy to travel with. Solo birding OS is a bit harder and requires a fair bit of time researching, but it is much more satisfying and gives one much more flexibility in your itinerary. I have been on one organised birding tour, but I don’t think I will be going on any others. I am quite happy doing my own thing.
Cheers,
Carl Clifford

I don’t have enough info to comment either way, but I think the point that was trying to be made was that the daily trips/activities were reconfigured to a lower standard than was previously understood would be the case by our original poster. John Mc(in a very hot) Victor Harbor
