Hi All, I forgot to mention in my previous post about a recently launched Canon ‘L’ lens which I think in my humble opinion could be the ultimate pelagic lens. I refer to the 70-300 mm ‘L’ lens which is of a completely new design from what I’ve seen and heard. It is light, rugged, compact and most importantly, weather-sealed, perfect for the boat!! Cheers – Paul W.

Sounds like a very interesting proposition Paul.
Is there anyone out there with this lens (70-300mm L) that would care to comment on its performance? The only drawback for me would be the slowish apertures.

Hi Paul and all that have responded
I do go on a lot of pelagics, so the advice on lenses is also of great relevance.
I have received lots of replies, both through birding-aus and privately as well. This is just to extend a tremendous thank you to all those that have provided advice so far, which will hopefully be useful to many others as well.
As usual this wonderful forum has provided a wealth of knowledge and expertise.
It will take some time to sift through all the replies and make some decisions but I will post the final summary and decision when it happens.
I will also respond to the individuals that have provided extensive information. In the mean time I haven’t forgotten your input and very much appreciate it
Cheers
Dick
