Raine Island Herald Petrel Pelagic trip 2014

Hello all,             I’ve finally finished organising the Raine Island Herald Petrel Pelagic.   I’ve chartered the 82ft (25m) ocean going cruiser, ‘The Boss’ for a Coral Sea pelagic trip to Raine Island to see Herald Petrel. This will be the first pelagic trip to Raine Island during breeding season since 1995 and a unique chance to see Australia’s rarest breeding tubenose.  The trip will start and finish at Lockhart River/Portland Roads, which will give people the chance to go birding in Iron Range either before or after the trip.  The trip is 3.5 days long and cost is $2200pp.  Date: 31/7 to 4/8/2014 With the itinerary I’ve designed you can fly into Lockhart in the morning, spend the day birding in Iron Range and board the boat in the afternoon without having any overnight accommodation costs.  On the way back, after breakfast you can disembark and go straight to the airport to fly home on the morning flight, again saving on overnight accommodation costs.  All on-board cabins have individually controlled air conditioning and the boat has five huge living areas spread over three decks and 5 toilets and 6 showers. Every room has TV and internet outlets with wired and wireless network available to print email and scan.  There is over 300m2 of floor/deck space. The BOSS has a very unique hull design with massive 18m stabilizing fins fitted along the vessel. This and the fact she is 7m wide make her a stable in all conditions. At this stage the boat owner has penciled in the trip but if I don’t get enough starters within the next couple of weeks, I’ll use a smaller boat (52ft cruiser) and defer till winter 2015.  We’ll definitely have enough people for 2015. If you’re interested in coming along in 2014 or if we defer till 2015, please let me know.  At this stage the trip is 2/3 full.  If enough people opt to fly at the same time, I’ll look at using a charter flight from Cairns to reduce everyone’s costs.  At this stage there are several people staying additional days to spend time birding in Iron Range.  Accommodation and hire cars are available at the airport. If you would like to know any more, please let me know.
