Fascinating discussion but……………
It never fails to amaze me the number of “dedicated” birdwatchers who publically admit that cats are a real “problem” in the Australian environment but yet are so enthusiastic in defending their own moggy pet.
Please note that the above comment is not directed at any of the group members who have so far “contributed” to this discussion. I don’t personally know any of those individuals and I am perfectly happy to accept that they are model citizens (in fact, if I met them in person I might even like them). I don’t know if they actually own a cat but I do know there are “high-profile” birdwatchers who do own cats and swear blind their cats are not a threat to native animals.
I don’t own a cat, haven’t owned a cat for at least 60 years, can’t own a cat ‘cos I live in a retirement village which bans such ownership. And that is one very good reason why I live there.
Also, “Wild Cat Diary” is one of my favourite programs. The big cats are amongst the most fascinating and wonderful of all creatures (possibly more fascinating and wonderful than birds – they may represent evolution at its most supreme) but pet cats are an abomination which all birdwatchers and environmentalists should abhor in the Australasian environment.
