Problems with the Birding Shop

Dear Friends, Please note the email from Roger Giller below. It appears that something very odd is going on with the Birdingshop. I placed an order for 3 CDs last Sunday night. The credit card payment was processed on the same day, maybe by some automated process. No CDs have arrived. I have tried to call them repeatedly during the week, but the phone always goes through to messagebank. I have contacted the Camberwell Police and asked them to investigate. I will be contacting birding-aus tomorrow morning, since they appear to be the lease-holders of the shop. I would advise everyone not to make any purchases from the birding shop until this who matter is clarified.

Hello John,

The Birding Shop appears to be having some difficulties to say the least. Note at the top of their web page the call for expressions of interest in purchasing the business.

I ordered three quick-release tripod heads last December, paying by Pay-Pal.

After lots of phone calls and emails I have received two, several weeks apart, around April/May. They obviously had no stock, and no way of purchasing them from the wholesaler/agents as I confirmed the latter had plenty of stock. Any emails I sent with the subject line “Missing Order” received an automated response to say that my order was being processed. I eventually made phone contact with the proprietor Charles who got me the two

I received. Both were obviously not new, but nothing wrong with them. Charles hinted that there had been some financial problems caused by a former employee. I understand he is no longer associated with the business. I still call and leave another message every so often, but never get a call returned. I’m just glad I did not order a complete set of HANZAB.

Based on my experience I would be most surprised if you ever receive the CDs. If you have any contacts in Melbourne you could ask them to investigate.

I hope your Central Australia trip goes well. Sounds like a good time to be going there given the recent rains.

Regards

Roger Giller.

The website front page is shown as last updated in May last year & was asking for expressions of interest to buy the business then. http://www.thebirdingshop.com/

This thread could end up being the last nail in its coffin. Let’s hope not…

    Hi all,

I’d just like to confirm that there is no relationship between Birds Australia and the Birding Shop. The two used to share premises and had a formal relationship, which was dissolved several years ago.

Birds Australia has no formal relationship with the Birding-Aus list either, although we happily acknowledge the important role this forum plays in facilitating communication and sharing knowledge in the birding community, and we appreciate the great job Russell does in maintaining and moderating the list and its discussions.

    Have a good weekend.

    Cheers,

Bill and Russell….My apologies. I actually meant Birds Australia not Birding-Aus. That’s where I found out about the Birding Shop. Steve Murray

    Thanks, Bill.

Can I clarify that there is NO connection between Birding-Aus and Birds Australia? The Birding Shop used to share premises with Birds Australia but I think that is no longer the case. There is no longer a link from the new birding-aus website (http://birding-aus.org ) to the Birding Shop. The old birding-aus website is likely to disappear soon as I no longer have access to that server.

No, Steve, the Birding-Aus newsgroup is not connected with the Birding Shop (or Birds Australia for that matter) in any way.

Poor Russell must be having a heart attack.

Dear Birders….. In September 2009 I ordered 9 of the Boca CD’s from the Birding Shop. 5 of them arrived after a couple of months. After several months of unanswered emails and fruitless phone calls I eventually received two more. I am still missing 2 and I think I have done my money on those. I became so frustrated I ordered the remaining CD’s directly from BOCA and they arrived within a couple of days. If anyone is thinking of getting the BOCA CD’s I would strongly recommend ordering them from BOCA direct. The Birding Shop did not answer any of my emails and it is almost impossible to get them on the phone. I do not know if this business is linked in any way to Birding-aus (there is a link I think from the website)…I hope not. Steve Murray
