Princess Parrots at Newhaven-A welcome from the Australian Wildlife Conservancy

As most of you know, Newhaven Wildlife Sanctuary, 4-5 hours drive NW of Alice Springs, is a large property managed for biodiversity conservation by the Australian Wildlife Conservancy in conjunction with Birdlife Australia (formally Birds Australia).

A flock of Princess Parrots has been observed on the property. We are excited and feel very lucky to have these special birds visit us here at Newhaven. They may stay for a while but could as easily move on as they are a nomadic species that will travel vast distances. Nevertheless, we anticipate that some birders may want to visit in order to try and see the Princess Parrots on Newhaven. In order to minimise disturbance to the birds, access to the property and the area where the parrots have been seen will be strictly controlled. Specifically:

. You will need to book into the Newhaven Campground in advance; there are a limited number of sites, and camping is not permitted outside the Campground.

o Please email newhaven@australianwildlife.org or call (08) 8964 6000 in advance to make bookings.

. Visitors will only be able to travel to see the Princess Parrots in the company of an AWC guide; there will be scheduled trips once or twice a day, depending on demand.

. Birdwatchers in these guided groups are expected to follow ethical birding guidelines, and follow the direction of the AWC guide.

. Visitors will be asked to pay a fee of $50 per vehicle to help cover the costs of providing the guiding service.

We expect all visitors to follow the standard visitor program conditions as set out on the Australian Wildlife Conservancy website. See: http://www.australianwildlife.org/AWC-Sanctuaries/Newhaven-Sanctuary/Newhav en-Visitors-Program/Newhaven-Accomm.-and-Facilities.aspx> http://www.australianwildlife.org/AWC-Sanctuaries/Newhaven-Sanctuary/Newhave n-Visitors-Program/Newhaven-Accomm.-and-Facilities.aspx .

Finally, the Australian Wildlife Conservancy relies on the support of conservation minded people, like yourselves, to continue to do the important work we do protecting Australia’s wildlife and their habitats. Any support is greatly appreciated and information on how you can do this can be found at: http://www.australianwildlife.org/Support-AWC.aspx http://www.australianwildlife.org/Support-AWC.aspx

Kind Regards,
