Perth Lakes update (mainly waders)

Hi all, Wader season is on in full swing near Perth. I checked Lake Cooloongup again this morning which is doing a very passable impression of a Lake McLarty-lite. Highlights included: Banded Stilt (1,000+, last seen flying south towards Walyungup about 30min before I left) Red-necked Avocet (60) Black-tailed Godwit (2) Common Greenshank (36) Marsh Sandpiper (5) Great Knot (3) Sharp-tailed Sandpiper (200+) Pectoral Sandpiper (1) Curlew Sandpiper (12) Red-necked Stint (350+) Long-toed Stint (6) Red-capped Plover (300+) Red-kneed Dotterel (32) White-winged Black Tern (1) Spotted Harrier (1) The real thing (Lake McLarty) was also looking good, a good variety of birds seen on New Year’s Day by Mark Newman, Alan Collins, Nick Brown and myself. However, a lot of the waders were still in the grass on the east side so it’s a little frustrating. Highlights included: Chestnut Teal (1) Eastern Cattle Egret (21, all but 1 were overflying) Black-tailed Native-hen (6) Australian Spotted Crake (6+) Spotless Crake (2) Red-necked Avocet (200+) Banded Stilt (30) Common Greenshank (26) Marsh Sandpiper (6) Wood Sandpiper (1) Common Sandpiper (1) Sharp-tailed Sandpiper (2,000+) Pectoral Sandpiper (8+) Curlew Sandpiper (7) Red-necked Stint (250+) Red-kneed Dotterel (1) Whiskered Tern (40) White-winged Black-Tern (7) Thomsons Lake still has all three crake species showing well, with a few sporadic reports of waders too. Lake Claremont has also been good, with both Freckled Duck and Chestnut Teal in residence, along with crakes, Red-kneed Dotterels, and the odd other wader Freckled Ducks also at Herdsman still (near the Wildlife Centre), and Kogolup Swamp. North Lake had little of interest a week ago, but the water level should be getting tasty about now Cheers, John _______________________________________________ Birding-Aus mailing list Birding-Aus@birding-aus.org To change settings or unsubscribe visit: http://birding-aus.org/mailman/listinfo/birding-aus_birding-aus.org

No – even post-cyclones they are rarely reported in Perth, especially without any real humid and overcast weather. And the ex-TC tracked a fair way inland of Perth. More often reported along the coast north of Perth but relatively few observers Thanks John Good to see the lakes around Perth Flourishing. Has the cyclone not pushed the Fork-tailed Swifts that were south of Broome down your way? Cheers & have a great year Mike Tarburton Email sent using Optus Webmail _______________________________________________ Birding-Aus mailing list Birding-Aus@birding-aus.org To change settings or unsubscribe visit: http://birding-aus.org/mailman/listinfo/birding-aus_birding-aus.org

The only other access I know of is a bit of a slog from the west side, there isn’t really much option CC: birding-aus@birding-aus.org Excellent news John :) Seems like a morning visit is in order for the weekend. I take it the Millar Rd West entrance is the go? Cheers, Ross On Friday, January 3, 2014 11:50:26 AM UTC+8, John Graff wrote: Hi all, Wader season is on in full swing near Perth.
