Outback bird survey volunteers needed in SA

Richard Fuller from the University of Queensland( http://www.fullerlab.org/ ) is organising some outback bird surveys (focussed in the South Australian outback, but also bits of NT and potentially WA). He is hoping to keep these surveys running for as long a period as possible while Australia dries out from the recent rain event, but initially he is looking to put together three groups of two to do some surveys for two weeks between mid October, and mid November. We need at least two more people, and possibly a third.

He is looking for some highly experienced folk with excellent birding skills and outback travel experience who might be able to volunteer. All expenses are covered including $0.60 per kilometre for up to 3000 – 4000 kilometres for anyone who is able to use their own vehicle. We will hire vehicles as required.

Essentially each team will be travelling along one of South Australia’s major outback roads, conducting line transect counts at designated areas, but we expect there to be some time available to do opportunistic counts. We expect each team will be doing surveys for 10-12 days, and most of that time will be spent driving or doing standardised counts, and people will be camping opportunistically along the way.

Please let me know if you are available, or if you are interested in future surveys.

I’ll send you a bit a paper work which we need filled out and further details on where exactly the surveys will take place, the kinds of transects, etc. for those who are interested.

Cheers – Rob
