I saw one at Glen Helen Gorge, west of Alice Springs in 1993. Probably hard to beat for an inland record! hi Annabel, it’s nice to get such a nice sighting so unexpectedly isn’t it!! I’ve had Ospreys up here well inland fairly often – my most unusual in nth Qld was one adult recorded once along Fossilbrook Ck which is only 3 mtrs wide!! it’s near Mt Surpise, 4 hrs drive sw of Cairns, so it does happen… great stuff!! cheers. martin cachard, Cains _______________________________________________ Birding-Aus mailing list Birding-Aus@birding-aus.org To change settings or unsubscribe visit: http://birding-aus.org/mailman/listinfo/birding-aus_birding-aus.org

I enjoyed the helicopter effect when in slow motion we saw what an effort it is to rise from water carrying a large fish – wings seemed to rotate. Wet dog effect great too. My first Osprey sighting, circa 1958, was when one landed one a tiny rocky islet in the Whitsunday group as our boat came alongside. It stood with wings half-furled and crest raised. The boatman said “Geez, the things you see when you haven’t got a gun!” When we girls asked why, he gave us to understand that as they eat fish, they would soon exterminate all fish worth catching, and the Queensland Government should give a large bounty for every ‘Fish-hawk’ slain.

Great images – and just the images – no naff commentary I love the bit where it shakes itself like a wet dog whilst in mid-air! Thanks for posting Tom Wilson
