Oriental Plover at Altona, Victoria – any update???‏

Good afternoon, Just wondering if anyone has an update on the initial posting on Eremaea Birds of an Oriental Plover at Altona on the 27th(?).Has this bird been seen since? Can’t locate anything as of yet on the new ebird site. Finding navigation through all the American based postings to be challenging. I’m pretty sure there’s no entry fee for the Homestead. I vaguely remember a ranger telling someone off for crossing that little bridge, so the channel it crosses might be the limit for where we’re allowed. Which makes you wonder why there’s a little bridge. Yes, that’s the one Pete. The tower’s a strange memorial to Australian immigration. In terms of whether the public is allowed to walk to the shore from the tower, I actually don’t know? I’ve done this on quite a few occasions. Just between you and I, whenever I’ve meet a ranger, instead of asking me to leave they’ve given me a lift and we’ve driven around birding together. Also, a slight correction (if you are allowed in this area), from the tower you need to head east to the beach (begin by crossing the little foot bridge) and then head north along the beach to Skeleton Waterhole Creek, not south as I first indicated. (I obviously had a problem with the directions in my minds eye.) Although, there are some nice shorebird areas along the beach to the south, towards the homestead. This was the spot where the Little Stint was seen in 2006. If there is a problem in terms of access, you could access the beach and Skeleton Waterhole Creek by not entering via Point Cook Coastal Park near the tower. Simply head into the homestead instead, and then walk north along the beach from there, thus not officially entering via the coastal park. Note that you may need to pay a fee when enter the homestead? Cheers, Tim ________________________________________ Sent: Friday, January 31, 2014 10:32 AM I asusme you’re talking about the tower accessed from Pt Cook coastal Park? Is the public allowed to walk to the shore from the tower, Tim? I was under the impression everything west of the tower was off limits, but I’m not sure. It would be good if someone could clarify this before birders start trying it. Peter Shute This email, including any attachment, is intended solely for the use of the intended recipient. Paul, Stuart Dashper and I went down there late yesterday, and didn’t see it. One area we didn’t manage to check out was the very mouth of the Skeleton Waterhole Creek. Late in the evening, when the tide was low, there was several thousand shorebirds here (-37.898681,144.801475). To get this spot, you could walk directly south from the Tower (crossing the small foot bridge, -37.913034,144.793517). I reckon, if you where going to look this would be the place to do it. Got very brief views of the unusual looking Golden Plover (possible American) in a salt pan to the west of the tower (-37.908941,144.781197), and they’ve been roosting in the scrubby salt pan just south of the road here.
