Hi all,
For Christmas I want to rid myself of the bogey-bird curse I have – the Olive Whistler. I’ve tried around Lorne, Sherborooke Forest and Toolangi but with little more than a distant call. (I’ve also previously searched for them around Eden, Kosciusko, the Blue Mountains and Gloucester Tops in NSW so it’s not like I haven’t tried!).
Therefore I anyone has any really reliable sites (I know there are no dead-certs!) within a couple of hours around Melbourne I would be really grateful for any tips you have.
By my reckoning it’s the only passerine in the SE coast habitat I am yet to get… so it would be a good way to round off 2011…
Thanks in advance – and happy Christmas,
Ed

See http://parkweb.vic.gov.au/explore/parks/wilsons-promontory-national-park for further details.
In March 2011 Wilsons Promontory National Park was damaged by a severe weather event. We have been reopening walking tracks once extensive repair works have been completed. The southern section day walks and all overnight hikes including the Lighthouse and Sealers Cove will remain closed while extensive repair works and track alignments are carried out. ===============================

Martin and Ed, I’d be calling the Prom before you go, as I think the overnight walk trails (including the one Sealers) might still be closed after the fires.
I’ll be at nearby Sandy Point shortly, and while you do get them in the back yard there, they’re nowhere near reliable.

Hi Ed Mate if I were you, drive down to Wilson’s Ptomontory. There are plenty down there… or I should say ‘were’, as my records there are quite old – in the 90’s they were fairly easy about the track that went to Sealer’s Cove from the start of track near Tidal River, but about halfway to Sealer’s you reach a ferny glade & I recall having more than one or two there. Also about the camp area at Sealer’s, they were there too. Actually I would not be surprised at all if they were still very widespread throughout the whole Prom itself…maybe someone has more updated news on this area, but I would think it’s well worth the walk in & out of Sealer’s – it need only take the day if you start out really early… Apart from there, I would highly recommend Discovery Bay CP, west from Portland, but of course that’s hours from Melb. Other than that, keep trying Sherbrooke, Gembrook, Tara-Bulga, etc etc… Hit The Prom, I’m sure they’re still there… Cheers, Martin Cachard, Cairns,0428 782 808
