Odd seabird sightings – Turramurra, N Sydney 28 Jan 2013

Hi all with the weather caused by ex-cyclone Oswald, there have been several sightings of unusual seabirds from further north, but today at Turramurra (northern Sydney – about 18kms in a straight line to the nearest open sea) I have had Silver Gull go over and then a much bigger gull-shaped bird (Jaeger, Kelp Gull)? Both about 9:30am. (Noisy Miners seriously not happy and making the call that normally means something they are not familiar with is about – very different to the normal predator alarm call.) No Frigatebirds yet – now that would be a novelty for the house list. Not sure what it’s like down on the coast here in Sydney for a seawatch (apart from visibility would be appalling if it’s anything like here at home). Cheers Tom Wilson

On 5 March 1995, a White-tailed and a Red-tailed Tripicbird were both swept into Armidale NSW by Cyclone Violet. They dropped into the MacDonald’s carpark!
