NZ birds

Hi all
Sooo…I need your advice on birds of NZ…I lived in Hamilton for 2 yrs in my 20’s but wasn’t a bird watcher …🙄
My family is there from early Dec 2018 to Mid Jan 2019
Any fav locations would be welcome?
Endemics locations?
Any reliable night time Kiwi locations?

ALSO…I’ve heard of an island where people go for day trips above Auckland ? maybe?? and get some of the endemic species which flourish on this island
