Allan Ible and I (from Sydney) are spending a week or so in NW Tasmania in early April (staying in Stanley and Corinna) and would appreciate information on good birding sites. One bird we have never seen is the Blue-winged Parrot, and I believe this parrot is sometimes seen on properties on Sealers Springs Road and on the Woolnorth property. To see the birds, is it necessary to access private property and, if so, can anyone provide contact details? We’ll have a Nissan X-Trail. Thanks, Jenny Madeline

Hi Jenny, They crop up in all sorts of places – often farmland, and open woodlands. The spots you mentioned should be good, and you could also try along the access road to Anthony’s beach, between Stanley and Smithton. Just north of Arthur River Township, heading west into the heath should also be good for them, and also possibly for Southern Emu-wren, Tawny-croned Honeyeater, etc. We have found Dempster’s Lookout, along the South Arthur Forest Drive reasonably reliable for Ground PArrot, and Strahan Airfield is also good for Ground Parrot, Emu-wren, Honeyeater and Blue-winged Parrot.
Cheers, and good searching, John Tongue Ulverstone Tas.
