On Saturday last I saw a Caspian Tern sitting steadfastly in an easily identifiable position on a sandbar in Mallacoota Inlet for a fairly long period. It revolved on the spot, but didn't move. I thought this looked though it was sitting on a nest. Today it, or another Caspian Tern, is in exactly the same position which to my mind confirms the breeding record.
As I don't have HANZAB with me I haven't been able to check material about breeding there but eBIRD only has one breeding record ("in suitable Habitat") for this species in East Gippsland. The Australian Bird Guide suggests most breeding is on Offshore islands.
So this seems to be a fairly unusual record.
