Needletails near Wallabadah, 3 Jan 13

There were somewhere between 50 and 100 Needletails wheeling about in the vicinity of the New England Highway near Wallabadah around 9 am AEDST on the 3rd of January. (Some skidding low, others high).

I picked a Crimson Rosella off the Waterfall Way late on the previous afternoon – it was on its back in the middle of the road about 20 km out of Armidale. It had probably bounced off a passing car. It was strong enough to bite me when I picked it up and to hold on to the branch of a nearby tree. It wasn’t there the next morning (no body or feathers in the vicinity) so I presume it made a sufficient recovery to fly off.
