g’Day all
At about 1500 hrs on Tuesday 05 September 2011, from the Maraude Beach carpark at St Helens Point, Tasmania, a single Nankeen Kestrel (Flaco cenchroides) was seen swooping low above the sand dunes flying north in a direct manner (no hovering) in westerly gale force winds. The bird was in view for about 30 seconds in excellent light passing about 50 metres to the east of me before flying out of view to the north.
Although we observe Nankeen Kestrels around central areas of Flinders Island and occasionally hear reports of them from around Cape Portland, this is my first sighting on the main island of Tasmania.
Regards
Ian May St Helens, Tasmania
