Maybe some will be kind enough to ID this call for me. It was recorded on my phone last week after midnight in a back street of Annandale/Leichhardt – very urban inner city Sydney.

The call was being uttered every 30-90 seconds. May well be something obvious but it has me beaten. I thought I knew the local frog, fruit-bat & possum calls. Somewhat like some Owlet-Nightjar calls (unlikely at this location). Could be a captive animal or non-biological.

Hi Andrew,
Just had a listen and, so this is just a first impression to get the ball rolling – I’ve not heard a native bird making this call, but it does sound like Japanese Quail (Coturnix japonica) that folk keep in aviaries. You might have a neighbour that keeps them? Fits with hearing them in the middle of the night I should think as well.
Seems to be plenty of calls on the internet that you can compare with.
Regards,
Allan Richardson Morisset NSW
