What’s lacking here is a chance for people to have a good look at these birds. I’ve never seen a close up view, and the screenshots on the web aren’t very clear. I don’t suppose you recorded it?

Tony, The work here is exceptional, but I have to disagree with the call on Long-tailed Finch. Watched the episode tonight on ABC2 and they had a closeup of the blue tittifers. I am actually not certain they do have wattles, but the shape is not right (particularly of the beak) for estrilid finches and they don’t have a long tail! I think you are on the right track with the colour inversion, so I will have to keep an eye out for species with black (as well as white) bibs. I was surprised at the amount of responses to this request, but I am not certain yet whether I actually have an answer. Cheers, Peter

Tony, are you able to put your colour inverted version of the birds on the web somewhere? I feel that just looking at them and comparing to pictures in books when we know the colours have been altered just isn’t going to work.

I’d be surprised if Kokakos were used for that – not only is the body shape all wrong, but there’s only ~400 of them, mostly in captive breeding programs or on sanctuarys in NZ. However, Shaft-tailed Finches are a common pet… Cheers,

I’m with Mick R on this one. They look like Kokako with a little white bib graphically added to romanticize them for children (note the white fuzzy bits added elsewhere on the page).
