I’m listening to some recordings I made at Bright over Easter, and on one I found a call I can’t identify. I’m wondering if it’s an Ownlet-nightjar, and I’d appreciate it if anyone would like to have a listen and cornfirm that or suggest something else: http://soundcloud.com/petershute/mystery-bird-apex-hill-bright
The recording was made on the side of the hill just north of the township.

Thanks for that, Greg and Helga. I’ve never seen one anywhere, let alone Bright, where I’m fairly sure it’s not on the Eremaea or Birdata lists.
An aural tick for me, I think. Are there rules for aural ticks? Can you count hearing it later on a recording, or is it like spotting something later on a photo?

Hi Peter,
NO doubt about it – an Australian Owlet-nightjar!
