With the recent thread about dead and dying shearwaters, several people have stated that the Short-tailed Shearwater is the most common bird in the world, with one quoting 23 million birds. I am not disputing these claims but they had me wondering as I have always thought that the most common bird was the Red Jungle Fowl with all its domestic forms. If looking at genuine wild birds then the Red-billed Quelea in Africa, with a reported figure of 1.5 billion birds, makes the shearwater look positively rare! Figures I’d heard quoted were that Short-tailed Shearwaters, at around 23 million, are the most common bird in AUSTRALIA (when they’re here), not the world!. John Tongue Ulverstone, Tas.
