All these examples of the ecological value of military land make me wonder if all that is needed to save some species is for them to be left alone. I would have thought that land set aside for military use might end up neglected and full of weeds. Is that the case, or does it not matter that much? I also wonder if this land tends to be of higher quality than national parks. I’ve read that national parks tend to be land that is unsuitable for settlement or agriculture anyway, and might therefore be of lesser value for many species.
