Masked Lapwings on a roof

At the local primary school here in Canberra I have noticed that a apir of Masked Lapwings frequenly the flat roof of the main, one-story building. I guess they avoid the kids that way.

Does anyone have any infroamtion about Masked Lapwings actually nesting on flat roofs?

Hi Does anyone have evidence of Masked Lapwing chicks hatched on a roof having got off the roof successfully? Cheers Peter Ormay

Hi Peter When I was in Auckland New Zealand in 2009 there were four pairs that were nesting on the roof of shops along Remurea Road. I still to this day wonder how the chicks ever get down to mother earth ! My cousin tells me that every year they nest on the roofs in his area.

Down here in Geelong at uni there were two pars nesting on the roofs of the buildings opposite my office. I’m not sure how successful they were at raising chicks though.

For the last four years running there has been a pair nesting on the roof of the YMCA at the Jamison Center. Last year I talked to the receptionist there and she said that “the Ranger was aware of them”. I don’t know what happened to them.

A few years ago there was a pair nesting on a flat roof at CSIRO Wildlife Gungahlin with three eggs that I checked daily. I blocked the downpipes with wire netting for the duration so the chicks wouldn’t fall into them before I could rescue them but the eggs were gone one morning and there was no sign of any chicks. There were Australian Ravens around all the time so I presumed they got them. Peter Ormay

    Hi John

A pair have raised young a couple of times from the flat-roofed house behind ours at Ocean Grove. The adult birds are there most mornings. I’m not sure if it is still the same pair of adults, or a new generation, but there has been a pair there year-round for at least 5 years.

I think Masked Lapwings are very site-faithful. I can think of several accounts where birds have nested in odd places in successive seasons – school yards, carparks, driveways etc.

    Regards Russell Woodford Ocean Grove

It seems, from the many reports I have recieved, that Masked Lapwings nesting on flat roofs is a common occurence.

    Hi John and All

On Kangaroo Island, SA, where masked Lapwing is very common, it includes Kingscote township lawns etc within its habitat. More than once a pair of birds have nested on the flat roof of the Kingscote gift shop in the main street of Kingscote, successfully producing young. In my ranger days I can remember having to rescue small chicks from the roof and relocate them to the esplanade foreshore lawns nearby (not much to eat up there!)-much to the concern of the noisy parents who berated me with much calling and swooping. In the end they settled down and the family of lapwings were again most happy together on the lawns and esplanade beach.

    Cheers

G’day John & others Masked Lapwings have nested on a flat corrugated iron shed roof near Wurundjeri Walk, Melbourne, this last season. Pacific Golden Plovers used to often roost on flat roofs in Samoa & American Samoa. Cheers Mike Tarburton

Two or three years ago, whenever I visited the Macquarie Discount Pharmacy there always seemed to be a pair on/or adjacent to/ the roof of the shops. Whether they in fact nested on the roof I don’t know. Robin Hide

Many years ago a pair used to nest on the flat roof gardens of the Cameron Offices Belconnen.

This gave them a good vantage point from which to attack 3rd and 4th Division staff as they walked into the building. (2nd Division parked under cover.)

My father occupied an office overlooking the Eastern Lecture Theatres at LaTrobe Uni (in Melbourne) for years. The roof was covered by what appeared to be river stones.

There were Masked Lapwings nesting on that roof nearly every year.

Speaking as a Wires carer, it’s not uncommon for Lapwing chicks to come into care with leg injuries from that first jump off the nest-roof.
