Gooday, how is sunny North Queensland? Sorry to disagree with you re the book industry but I have bought several books, usually out of date copies, over the internet because I cannot justify paying far more for a book at home just to keep the economy going. Have also bought several books from Australian book sellers after making a price comparison. I like many others I suppose have to look after my own economics. If the difference was only a few percent then no problems but the differences are often greater than 50% even after postage. A large latest edition text book for a bird course I did at CSU a couple of years ago was something like $180 from the Uni, about $140 from a co-op bookshop and $85 including post and delivery over Amazon. How can I justify paying an extra $90? Either the economic system forces the Australian book dealers to sell the books for the prices they do or they are simply greedy, either way, I don’t know and frankly don’t care, I am looking after my own pocket not theirs, and likely everybody else has the same attitude for all purchases, from shirts to cars, not just books.
I know it is not good for Australian economics and business but what does one do, what is the answer?

I certainly didn’t intend to undermine the local book trade (let alone to begin discussion of the rights and wrongs of the Australian publishing industry) on birding-aus. I foolishly assumed from the initial question that the book wasn’t locally available at a sensible price.

I agree. I’m happy to pay that much more, so long as I can get to a shop without too much trouble. I would only buy online if the price difference is extreme, or if the book simply isn’t available in shops, which is common for older books.

I picked up the new edition a few weeks ago for $35 at a local independant book seller here in Melbourne. Certainly worth the extra couple of dollars for the half hour I dodged work to browse a real book store .

For a few dollars more how about supporting the local book industry otherwise there won’t be any book shops left in Australia! The RRP price of the 3rd edition is $39.95.

Menkhorst and Knight is currently available at amazon.co.uk for GBP21.38, and if you can mange to spend another GBP3.62 they’ll send it to Australia for nothing.

Thanks for mentioning the new eidition. Found it here in the States for only $27, and while I was at it, picked up the most recent Slater for $18, although its arrival date is uncertain.

Hi Steve, the one that I find most useful is the Menkhorst/Knight one – A Field Guide to the Mammals of Australia. it retails for around $45.00. Be careful that you buy the latest edition (3rd) with a black cover as the 2nd edition is still on the shelves.
Having spoken with Peter only a week or so ago about the book, he advised that the third edition has some updated “splits” such as Mountain and Short-eared Brushtail Possums (Trichosurus cunninghamii and T.caninus) and Tasmanian Long-eared and Greater Long-eared Bats.
Yours in all things “green”

The 2nd ed of Peter Menkhorst/Frank Knight is excellent. I believe there is a 3rd ed now, but I guess Peter, who is on Birding-Aus too, should know better.
Cheers,
Nikolas

Menkhorst and Knight’s A Field Guide to the Mammals of Australia is very good, has a waterproof cover and cost me only $40. It’s currently in the 2nd edition, dated 2004. It’s a lovely book with Frank Knight’s usual excellent artwork. Hope that’s some help. Cheers,
Tony
Menkhorst & Knight’s “A Field Guide to the Mammals of Australia” is quite good and the closest to a field-sized guide I know of. I have the 2001 version (?1st Edition), but I the most recently updated edition was published last year
