Mallee Emu-wren

Hi All, Planning a possible trip through the Vic Mallee country, over to Gluepot in SA, and hoped to look for Mallee Emu-wren on the way. Is Nowingi Track the best place to try, or would somewhere else be more profitable? Would I need a “decent” 4WD for Nowingi, or would a ‘light-weight’ one do? Are there good places to try that don’t need 4WD (cheaper to bring a smaller car on the Ferry!).

Thanks for any advice, John Tongue Ulverstone, Tas. ===============================

    Hi John

In Hattah for the emu-wren, try also anywhere along Konardin track, which runs east-west between Mournpall & Nowingi tracks. I’ve had them there numerous times about halfway along it & also nearer to it’s junction with Nowingi Tk.

Outside the park, I’ve also had them over the years west of Hattah township out towards the Murray-Sunset NP. I’m not sure of exact distance but it would’ve been 5-10kms west of hwy when you get amongst some small pink salt pans with some good spinifex/mallee in the surrounding low hills. I remember getting them in mallee about 200mtrs in on the southern side of this east-west track – sorry I can’t be more specific…!!

Thanks Peter – yes sorry I meant the OLD Calder Highway.

    Apologies for any confusion,

    Cheers,

Ed, do you mean Calder Highway, or Old Calder Highway? I think the part of the Nowingi Track where most people go is at the south end, which starts a km or two along the Old Calder from the Calder. I’m looking at this map: http://www.parkweb.vic.gov.au/resources05/05_0337.pdf

    Hi John,

If you park at the Calder Higway entrance to the Nowingi track you will be fine with a 2WD. Then walk up the track listening/observing around the Spinifex areas.

I got a part of 4-5 Mallee Emu-wrens there about a month ago (in a 2WD) around about 200m up the track on the right hand side.

When I put a similar RFI out about 6 weeks ago there had been several other sightings at that time too.

    Good luck,

    Ed
