Little Lorikeets in Adelaide?

Walking to work with my wife this morning and we had two very small lorikeets fly past, green all over apart from the face, which was dull red, extending all round the beak. The underwing had no trace of red, so I’m sure it wasn’t Purple-crowned (which would have been a nice lifer). The size, wing motion, short pointed tail, call and colouring were spot on for a Little Lorikeet, but I can’t seem to find any records in Adelaide (or even SA) on Birdline SA. I found a paper from 2006 that states that they are uncommon Autumn/Winter visitors to the area, so what are the odds? The parkland is heaving with lorikeets at the moment, even more so since it got colder over the last couple of weeks. Cheers,

Tony

    Hi Guys,

Purple-crowned Lorikeet are a small bird with a low note call, often missed as they fly reasonable high.

Many older birders would have trouble hearing them at all.

They have often been seen in the car park of the Oban bus area of OG road amongst the gum trees there.

Hope that helps. No Guarantees of course

These birds pop up opportunistically all around Adelaide, it depends on what’s flowering at any one time. I’ve had them in my garden in Vista from time to time.

    Hi Tony

If you wanted to get the lifer(purple crowned lorikeet) in Adelaide, I saw my first one at Holden Hill approx 20 years ago. Don’t know if they are still around there or not.

Hi Tony,They are very occasionally reported from up in the Clare Valley around 100km or so north of Adelaide! Haven’t heard many reports from Adelaide itself? not to say they wouldn’t turn up from time to time! I’m just north of Adelaide and we get plenty of Purple-crowned Lorikeets, but i’m yet to find any Little’s amongst them! One day hopefully!!CheersChris Steeleschrissteelesbirding.blogspot.com
