Letter-winged Kites

Hi All

I read the reports in June/early July about LWK’s along Strzelecki and Birdsville tracks. I am wondering if anyone has seen LWK’s anywhere in western Queensland in the past few months ?

Cheers

Gary kindly sent me more precise details, and I am hoping to get out there with my wife, kids and Dad.

    I appreciate it Gary.

I think the chilling effect that the much feared egg collectors (sound a bit like the bogey man to me) have on legitimte birders looking for information to plan trips around probably does more harm than any actual collections! My guess would be that photographers are far more likely to disturb breeding than poachers. I’ve never seen or even heard of a poacher, but I’ve seen many photographers flush birds, approach nests closely and use playback around nesting sites. Many of those photographers are “in the club” and people who would probably have sensitive information shared with them without hesitation. As most of you know, I am also a fairly keen bird photographer, so I’m not slinging mud.

For reasonably well known sites like the one mentioned here, I’d assume any serious hunters already know about it and, to be honest, the very cliquey approach to only sharing information about rare sightings with “those in the know” is one of the less attractive aspects of birding.

    Alistair

    Hear , Hear Simon,

If people want to do something useful when they come across a nest, is make a report to B-A’s nest recording program. The next best thing is to keep shtum and hope that the nesting pair raise their brood successfully and without harassment.

    Cheers,

    Carl Clifford

I’m surprised to see this posting with details of a nest location ( yet another one ). Up until know I think we all new they were nesting up there, but the www did not have details, as it shouldn’t. If you want to know where a sensitive nest site is, you make contact with an individual, and if they trust you and want to share then they will. I know this subject has been gone over again and again. Russell, can this posting be removed before an egg collector reads it ( they probably already have), or once it is out there is it just too late ? And PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE everyone, don’t put nest locations online.

Regards, Simon Starr. ============================== To unsubscribe from this mailing list, send the message: unsubscribe (in the body of the message, with no Subject line) href=”mailto:birding-aus-request@vicnet.net.au”>birding-aus-request@vicnet.net.au

    Hi Simon

I did not intend to send nest location to birding aus and if I have I apologise. I thought I sent it only to the person who asked and I checked they were a legitimate birdo by searching the name through my emails.

The email I sent is not coming up on my sent emails so I can’t check what has happened. The To: box certainly only indicated the person’s name not birding aus. If you are referring to the general info I provided I don’t see a problem with this. Gary
