Lake Cargelligo

I spent 6 great days birding around Lake Cargelligo last week together with several others despite the rains. Perhaps because of the rain & that some roads were not passable, some of the species that were expected based on the archives – thanks Dave Stowe, Frank Antram, Nevil Lazarus, Carl Weber, Ivan Chapman, Troy Mutton, Graham Turner, were not seen. Interesting bits were: Nombinnie & Round Hill NP’s quiet. Missed Southern Scrub-robin & the Whistlers except the allways present Rufous. Ground Cuckoo-shrike & Banded Lapwing were on recently ploughed paddock near Murrin Bridge on Euabalong Rd. Euc flowering just starting at Mt Hope pub & Spiny Cheeked & Striped HEs, Little & Helmeted Friarbirds, Mallee Ringneck, Blubonnet & Major Mitchells concentrated here. At LC STP White-winged & Variegated F-Ws happily sharing the same little saltbush, preening & sun bathing. Also Baillions crakes very approachable.

But the rain slowed things down & I stopped for lunch at Kells Kitchen fast food van that sometimes touts for business beside the lake at LC. It is run by an older couple & their 30ish son. Mum & Dad were slaving over the stove & the washing up while son was lounging over the counter chatting to a nuggety 80 something cockie, skin so badly sun affected that it was just white scar tissue & eyes just sandy blight slits. Dad calls to son. “What are you think ya doin Son?” “Doin a bit of PR Dad” “You’re wastin your time Son, cant you see how old the bugger is.” Old cockie just blinks & specifies tomato sauce on his eggs. The rain eased & back to the STP. Chris

Hi Jason, Yes, you have a good chance to get all the mallee residents at Round Hill in December. I was there in December a few years ago and saw a good selection, including Gilbert’s whistler. January was not so good. It helps if there has been some rain. If it is very dry, honeyeaters may be difficult. Look for remnant pools of water, especially along the railway line. The water level in the lake should be reasonably high, as it was full in September. Birding around the lake is probably better as the water level drops. The STP is fully accessible at all times, but water levels do vary from time to time, and some ponds dry out. Consequently, migratory waders may not be present. The samphire and saltbush adjacent to the STP is always worth a check. Also, it is usually worthwhile to spend 20 minutes or so checking out the samphire and saltbush at Chat Alley. This is a section of road about 17 km from town on the way to Round Hill. It is about 1 km in length and is the only East-West strip of road on the trip. Good luck, Carl Weber —–Original Message—– Jason McHattan Sent: Monday, 14 December 2015 9:18 PM Hi All, My wife and I are planning to take a trip to Lake Cargelligo between Christmas and New Year. Having never been out that way before, I’m after a bit of info. Firstly, will there be any birds to see at that time of year? I’ve had a look at eBird, and it seems there should be a few about. Is there water in the lake at the moment? There is water levels reported on waterinfo.nsw.gov.au, but I don’t know what the normal levels would be. Any other info I might need? We’ll be staying in town, and going to Nombinnie NR, Round Hill NR. Is there access to the WTP, or can it be easily seen from outside? Many Thanks, Jason. Thanks everyone for the great info. It seems it should be a reasonable trip, if a little hot and quiet during the middle of the day. As we’re driving from Sydney, any suggestions for other places to either drop in to, or stay overnight, on the way to or from Lake Cargelligo? Many Thanks, Jason.
