We were delighted to find your webpage. CREST looks after a flock of around 100 semi-wild Sulphur Crested Cockatoos here in Tyabb. These remarkable birds live in the Heritage listed Radiata Pine trees that grow near the railway station. Our goal is to manage all aspects of their welfare, including health. We have a problem with Psittacine Beak & Feather Disease (PBFD) in our flock. The earliest recorded mention of PBFD in Australia is around 1888, in the Adelaide Hills. The world believes PBFD (caused by Circovirus) originated in Australia, and then spread to the rest of the world. I’m trying to find any Indigenous knowledge of PBFD in Australia prior to white settlement here. I’ve had great difficulty accessing our cultural knowledge. It is possible that this virus coincidently emerged around the time of white settlement, but this seems like a very big coincidence to me. Are you able to share any knowledge of Beak & Feather disease in parrots (all kinds) in our history? Your help would be most appreciated by our members. Thank you very much for your time.
