The passing of Ken is a sad time for us all. I recall having some contacts with him many years ago when I pointed out a small discrepancy in one of his field guides. There was a mix up in beak colours of some northern finches, I think it involved Long-tailed and/or Masked Finches. Ken responded to my information by checking his data and amending his next edition and being gracious enough to mention me in the acknowledgements. I also met both him and Nick Day on the boardwalks at the Nobbies whilst twitching a House Crow on Philip Island. We found it and Nick got some camera shots. His field guides have always been my books of choice in the field, being of a convenient size for travel. I remain ever grateful for his work in helping me in my birding endeavours. A great man, kindly remembered. Tony. —–Original Message—– Ceri Pearce Sent: Monday, 14 July 2014 7:16 PM Philip, I remember that flyer in 1976. I was a teenager and young member of BOC. I participated in that bird behavioural study during the eclipse at Daylesford, Victoria. It was one of those defining bird watching experiences I will never forget. So both you and Ken Simpson inspired my love of bird watching. Thank you. Sincere condolences to Kens family, friends and colleagues. Best wishes, Ceri Pearce _______________________________________________ Birding-Aus mailing list Birding-Aus@birding-aus.org To change settings or unsubscribe visit: http://birding-aus.org/mailman/listinfo/birding-aus_birding-aus.org _______________________________________________ Birding-Aus mailing list Birding-Aus@birding-aus.org To change settings or unsubscribe visit: http://birding-aus.org/mailman/listinfo/birding-aus_birding-aus.org

Once again, we have lost a great Australian ornithologist from the 20th Century. A great educator and mentor to people of all ages who had an interest in birds, through his written works, talks, classes and excursions, and one-to-one interactions with individuals. I also join others who knew him personally in saying that he was a very nice man and a true gentleman. That is sad. Nice man, though it is a long time since I was with him and he always seemed to be busy. Ken and I together published a supplement (we would now call it a flyer) to the Bird Observer in 1976 that encouraged people to observe what birds do with the total solar eclipse of 23 October 1976. That lead to what is still my biggest publication in the Australian Bird Watcher – (1982) ‘A record of avian and other responses to the total solar eclipse – 23 October 1976’, Australian Bird Watcher 9: 179-209. (The world’s biggest analysis of animal behaviour to a solar eclipse.) and something I’m still fond of. He helped with the initial editing of this, although it was his overwork on other things that contributed in part to it taking so long to appear in print. One day probably in 1991 I was sitting in the BOCA library researching about Regent Honeyeater vocal behaviour and by chance, Ken was also sitting there typing and probably researching text for his Field Guide book. He asked me for any suggestions and I offered a few little pointers about raptors and told him of my findings about the vocal mimicry of larger honeyeaters by the Regent Honeyeater and thus this information went straight into the draft text of his book, before my article – (1992) ‘Vocal mimicry of larger honeyeaters by the Regent Honeyeater Xanthomyza phrygia’, Australian Bird Watcher 14: 180-189, had appeared. Hi everyone I am also very sad to learn of his death. I worked on the original edition of Simpson & Day & found him to be a very & nice generous man & getting involved with that field guide was one of the greatest things I ever achieved, & it was mainly through his encouragement and help. So many people have that field guide in their possession & it’s helped many people identify birds & hopefully encourage the conservation of birds. His influence is very large & he will be missed. Condolences to his family & to all around him & knew him.-Kevin Bartram _______________________________________________ Birding-Aus mailing list Birding-Aus@birding-aus.org To change settings or unsubscribe visit: http://birding-aus.org/mailman/listinfo/birding-aus_birding-aus.org
