I agree about the bamboo, it’s roots will be out the drain holes looking to take over the world in no time. I would stay away from wattles, they can get very leggy if not tip pruned, unless you go to a specialised nursery and find some of the low growing varieties.. Bottlebrushes are fairly bullet proof and if you want good screening some of the dwarf lily-pillies are hard to go past, they need bit more water but can easily be trained into a hedge. Probably be good to select some of the lower growing bottlebrushes and tea trees if you went that way, some varities can get very large. All will provide cover and insect food.
