The recent NSW elections, has given the Shooters and Fishers Party the casting vote in the NSW Upper House. See http://www.smh.com.au/environment/ofarrell-over-a-barrel-as-the-shooters-take-aim-20110412-1dcpm.html This means that for the Government will need the support of the S&FP to have legislation passed, which might not be supported by the Opposition. This will result in a good deal of quid pro quo. Among the quid that the S&FP want are; I. no more National or Marine Parks, 2. the right to shoot in 29 National Parks, including Barrington Tops and Kosciusko NPs, and 3. private game reserves, which are hoped to be stocked with exotic game species , such as various Antelope species.
The NSW Premier says he won’t be doing deals with the minor parties. That will make Legislating interesting.

Hi all,
Note that you are assuming that Barry will not be able or willing to do deals with Labour or the Greens to get legislation through. Both would rather help Barry with at least some of his agenda than being seen to be sacrificing the environment. Given Barry’s response to the SF this may be what he is signalling subtly and leaning towards.. Barry will not be a ‘boofhead’ crash and burn ideologue pollie – he wants to be in for several terms.

The NSW Upper House is 19 Coalition, 14 Labor, 5 Greens, 2 CDP and 2 Shooters/Fishers. Like recent NSW governments O’Farrell doesn’t control the Upper House but courtesy the large coalition vote, he is close enough that he has various possibilities for getting legislation through the upper house. In newspaper stories he saying he won’t deal with the Shooters&Fishers but pragmatically it does seem likely he will – just as the Labour did – because a deal looks quite tractable. I guess we’ll see how much the Shooters&Fishers get – but O’Farrell is in a strong position so I doubt he’ll give them much, in particular I can’t see O’Farrell agreeing to a moratorium on new national parks. Its interesting a resumption of duck hunting apparently isn’t (yet) on the Shooters/Fishers agenda.

I think that the problem with modern democracy is not when the other side wins – that’s inevitable from time-to-time anyway. The problem is when neither major party has a clear majority, and the balance of power is held by minorities. Technically, with just one vote, the Shooters hold almost as much power as either of the two major parties in NSW by virtue of their casting vote.
I remember reading a article on this subject some years ago – for the life of me, I can’t remember the publication – but the gist of it was that small, single policy or even extreme parties, could effectively wield power in a modern government by NOT winning the election!

At least the Federal Government has been able to force the new Victorian State Government to withdraw the cattle from the high country. I suspect that even if the Shooters get their way and have the NSW State Government allow shooting in National Parks, this will be reversed by the Federal Government. I am not 100% sure of the gun legislation in this country, but I thought the gun laws were National, rather than State? Isn’t that how the Howard Government got the laws changed and the gun buy-back happening after Port Arthur?

Hi all,
I don’t know why everyone is so surprised and dismayed, it was all public knowledge before the election. It happened here in Vic with cattle on the highplains, a call for hunting feral animals in national parks, and we already have a greatly increased duck hunting season. NSW will be the same and I expect that Qld will follow as soon as the govt changes. The federal ALP looks shaky too. In the US where I lived anyone out for a walk in the woods had to wear a fluorescent jacket to try and avoid being shot at. Most times it worked.
As the song says, times they are a changing. Sigh.

I agree with you there Dave – I’ll never understand how people can justify killing an elephant just for a trophy! Shooting in National Parks would be a big danger too – especially with us birders walking around in the bush off-track looking for birds… Thankfully, next election I’ll be old enough to vote. Does anyone know of a petition running anywhere on these issues in NSW? Please post here if anyone finds one – I’m sure they’ll be a lot of support 🙂

This is so depressing and horrifying!! Seems weird that on one hand they want to get rid of feral deer from NPs but then want to add more to game reserves!! Speaks volumes about their motives i think. Can’t believe the images of the MP with a shot Elephant! I am seriously worried about the future. Seriously.
