Hoopoe – Carbon emissions

Dear All, Further to the thread I started, here is the relevant info from the Qantas Website about Flying Carbon Neutral. Cheaper than the Carbon Tax!!! Offset your flight to reduce your climate change impact. Our program only chooses independently accredited carbon credits and is verified under the Australian Government’s National Carbon Offset Standard – Carbon Neutral™ initiative. Do you want to offset your share of flight emissions for this trip (1,058 kilograms CO2-e)? Yes, offset flights – $9.76 AUD ($4.88 x 2 passengers) No thanks

Yours in all things “green”

Regards

I don’t know about all carbon offsets but The University of Tas has been spent millions of dollars from carbon offset money reforesting degraded agricultural land in the midlands of Tasmania. Even if the impact of that is small compared with the size of the problem, it’s certainly good for Tasmanian wildlife, including Tasmanian birds.

Not sure who the stakeholders with bottomless pockets are [actually I could name a couple] but us shareholders have been waiting for some years now to hear that the cheque is in the mail.

Still I would also direct my dollars in a more personal manner.

I reckon you’ve made your point John. Anyone got any birds to talk about?

I must confess to being very sceptical about all these carbon offsets – seems they are basically promising (for some unknown period) not to cut down a tree which otherwise they may or may not have cut down? How many times does the same tree get not cut down?

And of course as others have stated – the marginal impact of one extra passenger on a flight is very small – would be interesting to see how they calculate the impact per person and what load factor they assume

I must add that I am NOT a climate change sceptic – just do not believe in many of the “solutions”

One thing is for sure, I won’t be paying any useless Qantas carbon neutral nonsense now we have the carbon tax. Not that I would anyway – I certainly would not trust Qantas and its overpaid CEO to ensure that money paid as a “carbon offset” actually goes anywhere but straight into the bottomless pockets of Qantas stakeholders.
