Good to hear some nests have hatched recently on KI. It’s common for hoodies to hatch at this time of year. There are currently 4 broods of chicks on Momrnington Peninsula (Vic.) beaches and no fewer than 7 active nests yet to hatch there. Other areas also have active nests and I think we’ve had birds hatching as late as mid feb in the past. The hoodie breeding season is often very extended (legitimately August-March). Local conditions affect timing (e.g. tides washing beaches away in Spring) and not all pairs breed for the whole season but there are pairs in Vic. that have been monitored for 10 years+ that have laid up to 8 clutches in a year in vain (we know they’re the same birds as well because they’re banded!). We have a two pairs on their 6th attempt for this season at the moment. The good news though is that there is often greater success late in the season (i.e. now). Hope the birds have some luck on KI!
