All,
I have been approached to write a history of ornithology in the Northern Territory and am about half-way through drafts and research for the (increasingly daunting) project.
I think that I have the early days and most of the last century covered reasonable well but would appreciate any advice from list members of prominent ornithologists and other that have made a contribution to birding (in the broadest sense of that word) in the NT.
I am particularly interested in the namesd and research history of practitioners that have worked for governmenmt and non-government agencies – and whose work may not have turned up in the usual journals.
I would also be interested in any links to publications in international or non-birding journals that i may not have caught yet.
Thanks in advance and happy to discuss,
Bob Gosford
PS: I have a (very) tight deadline so sooner rather than later please!

Hi Bob I assume you’ve spoken to Tony Hertog, John Estbergs and Patrick Rowan.
John McKean was a prominent birder in the 1970s and 80s. However, in the eyes of Patrick at least Hilary Thompson (arrived 1971) was the first really professional birding guide.
He started Limosa in 1981 and I joined him in 1983, and took over in 1984.
Hilary published quite a few papers on Top End birds. Together we published ‘Common Birds of the Darwin Area’, the first bird book for the NT (1987). In 1989 we produced an annotated List of Top End birds which I’ll put on my website when I have time – it covers bird records and gives many more birders’ names.
I published ‘Birds of Darwin Mangroves and Mudflats’ in 1996 and ‘Birds of Australia’s Top End’ in 2000. This latter book was the first to use Bininj names and information.
‘Birds of Palmerston’ is going to press this week. It will be launched at Government House in Feb, 2013 should you like to join us. Regards
