I was planning to drive from near Canberra to Penrith tomorrow to twitch the Lapwing. Fortunately another Canberra birder was there and has advised that the site is closed due to setting up for something. On checking the website for the location

Just pulling legs Carl. Fear not I’m saving my fuel for the next blow-in. Sent: Monday, 14 September 2015 11:00 PM “When I were lad, I had to drive for two days from Adelaide, up Birdsville Track, through heat, dust and flies, to refugee camp at Burren Junction Artesian Bore. When I finally got there, I could barely see lapwing through the sweat and blood from my brow. Today! So-called birders just take electric train from Sydney Central to Regatta Centre, ask gatekeeper “Where is famous bird?” and stroll across immaculate lawn to where it is feeding.” Tony, it’s provided a great outing for the local birders, and we’ve all been amazed at how supportive officialdom has been. There can be difficulty in getting a clear view of the bird through the crowd of twitchers, however. —–Original Message—– Sent: Monday, 14 September 2015 4:48 PM Tough eh Carl. —–Original Message—– mailto:carl.weber@optusnet.com.au] Sent: Monday, 14 September 2015 3:21 PM I, for one, am more than comfortable with my view from 5 metres – including seeing its plumage in flight. There are 3 icons on eBird with GHL observations. The eBird hotspot Penrith Lakes and Regatta Centre has 23 for the GHL. The eBird Hotspot Penrith Lakes East 1’Cell has one observation. A Personal Location also called Penrith Lakes and Regatta Centre has one observation. There are 10 observations still under review waiting for observers to provide a satisfactory description of the bird, or to move the observation to the Penrith Lakes and Regatta Centre hotspot The Icon for the hotspot Penrith Lakes and Regatta Centre is just that, an icon for the hotspot. Nothing to do with the exact location of the GHL. Prior to the GHL there were 10 checklists for this hotspot. It was the obvious one to use for the GHL and most people have done that. Cheers Roger. —–Original Message—– Martin Butterfield Sent: Monday, 14 September 2015 10:06 AM Cc: birding aus Thanks Jill. Unfortunately I have commitments this week such that I can’t find a window of 7 hours plus (allowing 3 hours each way plus an hour there) to get up there. Since the issue of security first appeared I have had nothing but positive comments about how the gatekeepers and rangers are handling the issue. So a bouquet to them. The visibility of the bird from outside the site was also commented on, while the position of the icon on eBird made it look about 500m from Castlereagh Rd with the rowing course and who knows what visual blocks in the way. Had all the current information been available when I felt I had to decide what to do I’d probably have driven up yesterday. But it wasn’t so I didn’t and my onions got weeded instead! Such is life. Hi John I was there yesterday with Darryl McKay and we saw the bird first through the fence about 8.30 am (we took a wrong turn to start off with so were a bit later than planned). It was on the grass between gate B and gate C, took a bit of looking through the vegetation, and the sun was behind it, so not ideal so early, but we did see it clearly. Then we drove to gate A, having seen some birders in cars parked near the bird. We drove to gate A and explained what we wanted, and security said as long as we kept within that area between gates A&C, no problem, just stay away from the closed off area. They were friendly and helpful. We had a chat with the birders inside, including Edwin Vella, and they told us when they stayed in their car to observe, the bird approached within about 4 metres. We had the same experience, sun behind us, good for photos and for viewing! Really a very attractive bird, much more so than I had expected. Good luck, hope you can get up to see it. cheers Jill On Sat, Sep 12, 2015 at 10:19 PM, Tom Wilson < wilsonsinoz@optusnet.com.au> wrote: — Jill Molan 02 4283 2581

Martin check the Australian twitchers page on facebook and/or NSW pages on Eremaea/birdline if you can. Reports are that the bird has been visible from outside the venue today and yesterday. Cheers Tom W Sent: Saturday, September 12, 2015 5:21 PM I was planning to drive from near Canberra to Penrith tomorrow to twitch the Lapwing. Fortunately another Canberra birder was there and has advised that the site is closed due to setting up for something. On checking the website for the location it seems to be closed until 29 September. I am not keen on doing a 600km round trip to have some security Jobsworth tell me I can’t get to see the bird, “because ….” so wonder whether someone familiar with the area can advise if it is possible to see the bird without going to the rower-infested area. Hi Martin, et. al. Security at the Regatta Centre have actually been extremely helpful – as far as they have been able – to visiting birders wanting to twitch this amazing bird. The Centre is officially “closed” – not for anything to do with rowing, but to set up for a two day music festival. There are likely to be thousands of people, cars, loud music, laser and fireworks shows, so anyone planning to twitch the bird should go sooner rather than later. Though the site has been ‘closed’ for the last week, the bird has generally been viewable from outside ‘Gate C’, along Old Castlereagh Rd. However, when there has not been too much activity going on, Security on Gate A (the usual entrance) have been letting birders in to drive to the Gate C area, and view the bird from inside the facility. This has not always been possible, and has varied from day to day, but generally, Security have been very helpful, and more co-operative than they need have been. It would be great to keep that good working relationship if possible. All the best with the twitch, John Tongue Devonport, Tas. Thanks to those who responded. Apparently the area where the bird has been seen some of the time is visible from outside the venue (looking through a chain link fence). However as the event involved is a trance music festivaland thus likely to become extremely noisy as soon as sound checks etc begin I’ve decided the chances of spotting the bird have become too small to justify wasting a tank of diesel.
