Actually Nathan, World Bird Names states that only albiventer has been lumped with atriceps in southern South America due to sympatry. Unless I have read it wrong there are still 14 species of southern Shags in the genus Leucocarbo.

Where did you hear that? That would be very surprising! Sacra has never been part of the garzetta complex.
Also the eastern form of Western Reef Egret schistacea although mostly treated as a subspecies of garzetta might not be part of the garzetta complex but clearly different from Eastern Reef Egret sacra. The confusing thing is that the western form of Western Reef Egret gularis is likely conspecific with garzetta!

Baffles me why they split them in the first place. Sure there are some differences, but as an ecologist and an evolutionary biologist I will never understand why taxonomists think that a difference and a different species are the same thing
