Gouldian Finches

Just a message for Tom and mandy wilson…and anyone else interested I thoroughly enjoyed reading about your trip in the N.T and your birding highlights….. It brought back good memories. In regards to the Gouldian Finches that you were trying to see…I was at Lake Argyle W.A a couple of years ago and Gouldian Finches/black faced and red faced were fairly plentiful at the caravan park there up on the hill. Each morning, sprinklers would be turned on to water the grass….As you drive in the entrance to the park, you drive along a little way till your pretty much at the back of the park and then you turn left and along there on your right you will see a raised dirt/grassy area, this is where the sprinklers would be and each morning the Gouldian finches would be drinking at the puddles from the sprinklers and bathing in them, but they all seemed to clear out by 6:30am and fly up into the trees and just sit there or fly away and dissapear. So you had to get in early to photograph/view them, i did locate a red faced one later in the day by itself near my motorhome… So, i know this is in W.A but perhaps a trek out there one day will be worth it. Other great birds plentiful around the caravan park are Spinifex pigeon, double barred finch, northern rosella, great bowerbird, and out behind the park is a walk which i viewed White quilled rock pigeon fairly easily….there is also a birding cruise on lake argyle available. Lake Argyle is an incredible place, can’t wait to return Hope this helps for the future  Regards Kirri ===============================
