Hi All,
We were surpised to see a lone Golden Plover at Shoalhaven Heads this afternoon, and it didn’t look quite like the ones we are used to seeing… I managed to get a few below-average photos which we have uploaded to http://photobucket.com/ShoalHeadsPlover; we would be pleased to hear any comments.

As to the species, because of its rear end structure and leg length, it is a Pacific Golden Plover. I would have thought the spotting indicates a juvenile but the spots seem to be more white than yellow and in any case it is far too early for a juvenile to be here. Having discussed it with Danny Rogers we think it is a first year bird and one that is likely to have overwintered in Australia. They do so more commonly in northern Australia than in the south.
